Vega Bordeaux hosts exquisite photographs of South African farm gates, Wednesday 5th October 2011

If you’ve ever travelled through South Africa by car, you have to attend and experience the ‘Gate’ Image Evening on Wednesday 5 October, 17h30 for 18h00, in the Vega Joburg Campus Auditorium.
Steven Kotze, brilliant young historian, will present on a recently published book called Gate.  The book is an exquisite photographic, social and cultural analysis of explicit and implicit statements made through the design of South African farm gates. The authors, Ian Wolstenholme and Steven, make a case for an agricultural design aesthetic.
Steven says of his presentation:  “A turbulent past has given rise to contrasting concepts of territory, and a complex set of relationships between people and spaces they occupy. The farm gates serve as the portals to their land.”  Steven will share the breathtaking images of the distinctive styles that land owners have selected and will also show that many icons of South African interior design in fact originated in the homes of farmers. Steven has done a number of collaborative projects with designer Garth Walker and has a remarkable breadth of knowledge.
You will leave this presentation enriched and informed in many different ways. Please do not miss the opportunity. Copies of the book will be available at the event.
We look forward to seeing you.
